Watch: PM wants national debate on electoral districts

Monday, 27 September 2021, 19:19 Last update: about 4 years ago

Prime Minister Robert Abela said Monday that he wants to see a national debate on electoral reform, including on the electoral districts.

Speaking to journalists after a Cabinet meeting, Abela said would not say what his own views on the subject are, as he does not want to “kill” the debate, but said that there are certainly things that could be improved.

There needs to be a discussion on electoral districts, Abela said. “Societies evolve, so structures and rules need to evolve accordingly to better reflect them.”

Abela was asked what he had in mind when he spoke on the need for an electoral reform during last week’s political rally.

“Isn’t the number of districts in Malta one of the things we should discuss,” he said, when pressed on the subject.

If I were to say, for example, that all of Malta should become one electoral district, I would be killing the debate, not fostering it. But there are things that need changing. We will listen, and then we will take decisions.”
