Watch: Best protection for journalists, activists is for intimidation campaigns to stop – NGO

The best protection for journalists and activists is for 'campaigns of intimidation and incitement' against them to stop, Repubblika President Robert Aquilina said.

He was responding to a question by this newsroom regarding Manuel Delia, who said that he has security concerns and would be leaving the country for a while, taking up a scheme by the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom to work abroad.

"It is unfortunate that an international organisation that protects journalists had to approach Manuel Delia and offer that he participate in a programme abroad in order for him to be more safe for a time," Aquilina said.

"My appeal is that this country needs to take the lessons which it should have long learnt from the public inquiry into the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, as well as from what we have gotten to know over the past years."

"We show solidarity to Manuel Delia over what he is passing through. I want to make another appeal. I am sorry that the media which the Prime Minister is responsible for, the PL media, still organises against us activists campaigns of intimidation and incitement. The best protection activists and journalists can be given is for these campaigns to stop."
