Six electric buses delivered to Gozo last year remain unused

Monday, 25 October 2021, 14:40 Last update: about 4 years ago

The Gozo Ministry has bought six electric buses after a tendering process two years ago. The buses arrived in Gozo last year and cost European funds €1.7 million, but have not been used so far, Times of Malta reports.

The purchase of the buses was done under previous Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana and the main intended use was to transport passengers from a park and ride car park to Mgarr and back.

They are currently parked in a government owned car park in the limits of Xaghra, Gozo.

In October last year, in reply to a parliamentary question, Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said that discussions are currently still being held in order to determine how best to make use of them.

The company which supplied the Foton AUV busses is an extension of Tumas Group called TUM Invest, owned by the Fenech Family.

In a statement, the Nationalist Party said that “this is a clear message that the government does not plan for the future. After spending €2 million and waiting for two years, the government still doesn’t know what they are going to do with these buses.”

Camilleri ensured that although the buses were not being used, maintenance procedures were still being carried out and the buses were being charged accordingly.
