Wednesday, 29 December 2021, 12:43 Last update: about 3 years ago

Malta hit another daily record of Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, as 1,337 new cases were reported.

The first time Malta had over 1,000 cases was on Tuesday, when Malta hit its previous daily record 1,298 cases.

116 people recovered from the virus on Wednesday, meaning that the number of active cases has climbed to 8,956.

82 people are currently at Mater Dei Hospital with Covid-19. The number of people in ITU rose by one, and now stands at 6.

The daily statistics do not include the number of people in other hospitals with Covid. Responding to questions by this newsroom, the health ministry said that besides the 82 active cases at Mater Dei Hospital, there is one patient at Gozo General Hospital, and one other patient at Karen Grech Rehabilitation Centre, who does not need acute care at Mater Dei. "The appeal of the health authorities remains for all those eligible to get their vaccine and their booster shot as the hospitalization rate, especially that in the ITU, is proof of the importance of the vaccination programme."

Up until Tuesday, 1,052,035 vaccines were administered, 206,611 of which were booster shots. 8,110 swab tests were carried out on Tuesday.

Malta has had 49,625 cases of the virus so far. 39,874 of those have recovered. 476 people have passed away with Covid since the start of the pandemic.
