A woman was found dead in the Independence Garden in Sliema, the police said on Sunday, and a murder investigation is underway.
The 29-year-old Polish woman was found dead, face up on a ramp leading down to the garden beneath the fence just off of Tower Road at 6.20am, the police said in a statement.
A medical team as well as the Major Crimes Unit and forensic experts went on site, and the woman was cerified dead.
She was later identified by news outlets as Paulina Demska.
An investigation by the homicide squad and district police officers resulted in the arrest of a 20-year-old Maltese man from Zejtun in Balluta soon after, on suspicion of having murdered the woman.
A police spokesperson said that the man was in possession of certain items that seem to indicate that he was involved.
He was taken by the police for interrogation.
Duty Magistrate Astrid May Grima was informed about the case and a magisterial inquiry was launched.
Investigations to establish the details about the case are ongoing.
