Nine years after Daphne’s murder, Malta has still failed to deliver justice – David Casa

PN Head of Delegation in the European Parliament David Casa today led a gathering in Brussels to mark the ninth anniversary of the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, renewing calls for justice following the recent acquittal of the man accused of commissioning her murder.

The gathering, held on the European Parliament’s Esplanade, was organised in collaboration with the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM).

Participants gathered in remembrance and solidarity, holding placards bearing Daphne’s photograph and the message “9 Years. No Justice”.

“Nine years ago tomorrow, Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated for exposing corruption, abuse of power and serious wrongdoing. Nine years later, those who carried out her murder have been convicted, but nobody has been convicted of ordering it,” Casa said.

“The recent acquittal was another devastating blow to Daphne’s family and to everyone who has fought for justice. The Maltese state has failed to secure a conviction for commissioning her murder. That is unacceptable.”

Casa stressed that Daphne’s assassination was not only a Maltese tragedy but an attack on European democracy and press freedom.

“A journalist was murdered for doing her job in a European Union Member State. Europe cannot look away. We cannot allow the passage of time to weaken our determination to secure justice and accountability.”

Casa reiterated his solidarity with Daphne’s family and praised the journalists and civil society organisations that continue to defend press freedom and demand accountability.

“Nine years. No justice. We will not stop demanding it.”
