Beloved doctor Victor Calvagna has passed away, the foundation he was President of announced on social media on Tuesday.
Calvagna, a well-known oncologist and president and founder of Puttinu Cares, was critically injured after being hit by a car last week while he was out running in Qawra.
He was 63 years old.
In a post on social media announcing the news, Puttinu Cares described Calvagna as a humble man who "gave his whole life to sick children and their parents whom he loved so much."
"He taught us how to be a service to others without ever expecting anything back. Thank you for the good examples and values which you taught us. We will never forget you and we will always love you," the foundation said.
His wife, Carmen, said before the New Year that her husband's MRI results had come back and showed that he is "brain dead". It was later clarified that only 5% of his brain was still functioning following the accident.
"They will stop all treatment and let nature take its course", she said.
Victor Calvagna was the first Maltese children’s cancer doctor, and that he had increased the recovery rate to 80%.
The Malta Police Force confirmed that Calvagna had died, and said that a magisterial inquiry and its own investigations into the accident are still ongoing.
