We can change the present mentality of 'winner takes all,' independent candidate Arnold Cassola said while announcing his candidacy for the general election.

"There should be a balance, we need to adopt a 'give and take' mentality" he said.

Last week, Cassola began his electoral campaign with a website and a slogan that reads 'We deserve better'.

During his official campaign launch on Tuesday,  Cassola explained how there should be a change in the opposition.

"The upcoming election is a historic one.. because it is not about who will win, but what type of opposition we will have for the next 5 years," he said.

Cassola said that the present political chaos has been caused by the 55 year old two-party system.

He added that Malta needs people in the opposition who aren't corrupt.  Cassola remarked that unlike other candidates, he is contesting by himself as an independent candidate with a track record of 30 years in activism.

He highlighted how he did his part in assessing good governance in Malta with calls for investigations, on issues like the Justyne Caruana scandal, where she awarded a €15,000 contract to her unqualified friend, leading to her resignation.

During the conference, he said that the 21% percent who do not trust either party leader have the power to change things.

"Together, we can ensure that we make our country a better place for all of us to live in".

Cassola is contesting on the 10th and 11th districts.

His electoral manifesto focuses on three pillars, which are the necessity of living in a clean environment; the importance of electing transparent, accountable and honest politicians who follow the rules of good governance; and the compelling need for a compassionate society.

He expanded how he wants a two-year moratorium on tall buildings, during which the country can reflect on past mistakes, from which better planning of policies can flourish in the future. He added how he would like for the law to state and enforce that the coastline is public domain, thus it should be accessible by the general public.
