A motorcycle rider died on Triq Aldo Moro in Marsa this morning, after metal objects being carried by a truck fell over him as the vehicle overturned.

The victim is a 28-year-old man from Nepal who resides in Msida.  He was named by TVM as Ajay Shrestha.

The accident occurred at around 11.30am, the police said.

The police told The Malta Independent that the preliminary indications are that the driver of the truck - a 56-year-old man from Cospicua - lost control of the vehicle he was driving in the direction of Valletta.

The truck hit the centre strip and overturned onto the other side of the multi-lane road.

Metal objects being carried in the truck fell onto the biker and two other cars being driven in the other direction towards Paola.

The cars were a Hyundai i20 driven by a 39-year-old man from Moldova and an Audi A1 driven by a 52-year-old Swieqi man.

A street light on the centre strip also toppled over onto the other side of the road.

The motorbike rider was rushed to hospital and the police later confirmed that he had died.

The other people involved in the accident did not suffer any injuries.

Part of the road was temporarily closed off to traffic.  An operation to remove the truck and debris commenced later on Wednesday.

Magistrate Astrid May Grima is leading a magisterial inquiry and investigations are ongoing.
