The PN’s proposal to give a second chance to people who commit a contravension is in line with what the courts already do with some serious offenders, depending on circumstances, PN Leader Bernard Grech said on Thursday.

Speaking in Birzebbugia, Grech explained how the proposal to freeze contraventions for six months and not issue a fine unless the offence is repeated within that time is an opportunity for people to learn from their mistakes.

“We believe in the importance of civil education, so what we need to do is encourage these people by teaching them to do better,” Grech said.

Grech emphasised that when a person commits their second offence in a period of six months then they will be subject to pay all their contraventions, with traffic contraventions carrying the possibility of having license points deducted.

“We want to encourage people to comply with the law, so that people with disabilities will not have a hard time to find parking”, he said.

During the press conference, Grech promised a never seen before “afforestation project” in all localities.

He said more detail will be announced later in the day, when the party unveils its electoral manifesto.

He remarked that the PN’s plan is to continue investing in businesses as it believes that it is one of the major ways it can help change work conditions and secure better salaries.

The PN pledges to focus on giving more public spaces as it believes that apart from working and existing, people should be able to enjoy their life, Grech said.
