‘More than 200 Maltese residents in Luxembourg disenfranchised by government’ - Peter Agius

Saturday, 26 February 2022, 10:07 Last update: about 3 years ago

More than 200 people who work in European Union institutions in Luxembourg have been disenfranchised due to the government “forgetting” to organise flights for early voting, Nationalist Party main spokesman Peter Agius said.

Yesterday, details for early voting were published along with details for people who live abroad who would like to vote.

According to Agius, the government seems to have forgotten about the Maltese in Luxembourg as no flights were listed.

“Malta seems to have forgotten the hard working Maltese people in Luxembourg who are constantly working to translate foreign material, websites, laws and other official communications. Without them we do not know what is going on in Europe.”

In comparison Agius said that affidavits can be taken in cities like Washington and Doha but no plans were made for Luxembourg.

“Luxembourg is a small country like ours and the government has forgotten it. We ignored the 200 plus Maltese residents. This is ridiculous.”

Agius also stated that this is not the first time that the government has forgotten these people. In the European Parliament elections, the same situation had occurred. “The message is clear from the government, if you want to work in Europe, you’re on your own.”

The commute by the Maltese residents in Luxembourg to Malta comprises of a three hour train trip, half an hour taxi to the airport and a further three-hour flight to Malta. Agius said that “Everyone is ready to go through this hassle but the least the government can do is make the preparations necessary.”
