Government seals €4.2 million agreement with Caritas

The Ministry of Solidarity and Social Justice, Family and Children’s Rights has sealed a € 4.2 million agreement with the Caritas Foundation to run the New Hope project for drug users.

This project is set to help people overcome drug-related difficulties.

This financial agreement will guarantee the use of 42 beds and 7,500 hours of therapy per year at the San Blas rehabilitation centre.

The New Hope project will be providing rehabilitation programmes for both men and women. This 3-year agreement designed to provide customer support and a sense of empowerment, will lead such individuals to reintegrate into society.

During a press conference Minister for Social justice and solidarity, family and children’s rights Michael Falzon, said that in the last five years the Ministry has worked closely with Caritas, as previously it has agreed with then entity regarding the management of the Ibwar Centre and of Charles Miceli House.

"Today we have invested another large sum, because we believe that it will serve as a stimulus for every person who wants to reform his life.”

He added that the ministry does not care how such individuals ended up in their repective situation as “we just care about helping that individual get back on their feet.”

The minister said that it is not a sign of weakness to seek help but rather one of courage

Falzon added that a Labour Government is the guarantee of support for every NGO and Foundation that wants to continue to help people and do good in society.

The Ministry for Solidarity and Social Justice has partnered with 25 voluntary organizations to work through 33 agreements in various areas - from child and youth protection, to working with people who have mental challenges, those with addictions, victims of domestic violence, and it has also provided assistance to women facing challenges during pregnancy.
