We need to have enough skilled labour for the careers we are creating, as investors are talking about careers which give satisfaction apart from financial stability, said Prime Minister Robert Abela on Friday.

Abela said that Malta needs to cater for its sectors and emerging new ones, particularly when it comes to human resources.

During a political event at MCAST, where journalism students were given the opportunity to ask questions, Abela said that the PL has been working on its manifesto since the first day of the electoral campaign, where the environment was always a priority. He said that Malta is taking its role seriously at protecting the environment as it also creating better emission level targets which are set to decrease.

Speaking about the guarantee for children that a PL government is giving is that it wants to create a level playing field for every individual, with its tax credit proposal, as extracurricular activities impact the formation of the character. 

Speaking about students, he said that students should not feel discouraged to enter the work force whilst they are still pursuing their studies, and that is why the PL has increase the hours allowed per week, where students can works and still benefit from a full stipend.

Answering a question related to the cultural and arts sector he said that It was amongst the most hit during the pandemic. He said that although the government provided its financial support and will continue to do so until it recovers, Malta needs to invest in more sectors, so if another similar situation happens these new sectors will be able to be covered financially.

He added that the Malta Tourism Authority cannot work against the cultural and arts sector, but rather it needs to work hand in hand to promote its events and make them happen.

Asked about the reusable energy situation in Malta, Abela said that Malta needs to profit more of its renewable energy sources.

“We have the wind and the sun are not being utilised enough”, he said.

He added that out of all European countries it is only Malta and Cyprus that do not have a direct ready gas pipeline interconnector. Abela said that it the government is intalks with the EU to give the go ahead for it happen as the majority of states “do not know what it means”.

Speaking about partisan media and the role of media in general in the Maltese society, he said that reported news needs to be factual. Addressing partisan media he remarked that they are there to send out the message of the political party.
