'I want to stay on as party leader', Bernard Grech says

Sunday, 27 March 2022, 12:46 Last update: about 3 years ago

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech said Sunday that he will go before the structures of the Nationalist Party to be confirmed as party leader.

This announcement came after reports indicated that the Labour Party is on course for another landslide victory, by a margin of 30,000 votes or more.

The counting of votes at the Naxxar counting hall is still ongoing. Prime Minister Robert Abela said that Labour has obtained a majority of votes, but he did not say how much.

In a brief statement addressing the public on Sunday, Grech said that although the Labour Party has won, the Nationalist Party carried out a very positive campaign which sought to deliver the PN’s vision.

“The party’s aim is to give voice to those who showed faith in us during this general election,” Grech said.

He said the party will analyse the result of the election, also giving consideration to the substantial number of people who chose not to participate with their vote.

He added, “I will make sure to continue working and continue giving my service and my all to this country. Thus, in the coming weeks, I will be asking to remain as party leader.”

“It is evident that despite the defeat, the Nationalist Party still remains strong,” Grech said.

Grech thanked the thousands of voters who chose the Nationalist Party during this general election.

He said that “despite the Labour Party’s power of incumbency and every attempt throughout this election campaign, to influence voters by giving the public cheques, the Nationalist Party always made sure to carry out a positive and strong campaign.”
