Malta has voted for their preferred candidates, with the Labour Party romping to another historic electoral victory.
The 65 candidates who have been elected – five in each district – have now been confirmed.
This is not the full list of who will make up Parliament; a quite staggering 16 candidates were elected on two districts. Each of those candidates will have to drop one of their districts, thereby opening the way for another unelected candidate to take their spot.
The candidates who were elected on two districts are as follows: Robert Abela, Clyde Caruana, Chris Fearne, Owen Bonnici, Miriam Dalli, Silvio Schembri, Ian Borg, Clifton Grima, Michael Falzon (all PL); Bernard Grech, Stephen Spiteri, Mark Anthony Sammut, Ryan Callus, Adrian Delia, Joe Giglio, Robert Arrigo (all PN).
A number of notable names will have to rely on a casual election in order to retain their seat in Parliament, including PL figures such as Rosianne Cutajar, Glenn Bedingfield, Joe Mizzi, and Evarist Bartolo, and PN figures such as Jason Azzopardi, Karol Aquilina, and Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici.
There is also the gender corrective mechanism to be reckoned with. Only four female candidates have been elected thus far and, while that tally may increase through casual elections, it seems likely that another 12 female candidates – six from each party – will be elected to make up the numbers.
In the meantime however, The Malta Independent has compiled the list of candidates elected on each district so far, which can be found below:
