Discussions on specialised squad for Paceville to continue

Wednesday, 18 May 2022, 17:17 Last update: about 3 years ago

Discussions on setting up a special squad focused on security in Paceville will continue, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri has said.

He was responding to a Parliamentary Question posed by PN MP Karol Aquilina on the subject, who asked for a definitive date as to when this squad will be set up.

No date was given.

The minister said that the police force is committed to ensuring a safe country for everyone, in Paceville and in all other localities. He acknowledged that the night life in Paceville brings with it particular challenges. Camilleri said that over the past months the police continued to improve on a number of fronts, including having greater presence in the community through the community policing project, including inside St Julian's and Swieqi, to start better addressing the problems.

The minister said that a considerable amount of resources was allocated for these aims, while methods were adopted that ensure more security in Paceville. He said that in the same period, the police force was in discussions with a number of partners, including the Police Officers Union, to spur on the creation of an organ focused on Paceville and security there. He said that this was a pledge in the electoral manifesto, and the government will ensure that discussions continue, with the aim of creating an adequate setup to ensure the security in Paceville with the involvement of specialised police officers.

In its manifesto, the PL had pledged to create new specialised police squads, including one focused on security in Paceville and the surrounding areas.
