Tuesday, 9 August 2022, 18:25 Last update: about 3 years ago

Archbishop Charles Scicluna met with the staff of St Albert the Great College and expressed his hope that initiatives of inclusiveness be implemented in Church schools in the spirit of openness and dialogue with all stakeholders, particularly in schools that fall under the direct management of the Archdiocese.

Mario Mallia, who was the headmaster of the college, was recently dismissed. He had told The Malta Independent that instead of understanding the inclusivity initiatives undertaken by the administration at the St Albert the Great College, an individual from the Curia filed a complaint about them which led to the school board putting them to a stop. However, the St Albert the Great College board and rector had categorically denied the "unfounded allegations that have been circulating publicly, and were also published by certain media outlets, regarding the termination of employment of Mario Mallia due to disagreement on policies of inclusion."

The Archbishop's meeting on Tuesday was held with 50 educators from the College, that is run by the Dominicans. The educators had the opportunity to speak their minds and speak with the Archbishop.

"The Archbishop, with complete respect towards the autonomy of the Dominican Order on the running of the College, made an attempt at mediation after the removal of former headmaster Mario Mallia, with whom the Archbishop met last week. The Archbishop was also in contact with the Provincial of the Dominican Order. The Archbishop appealed to the staff not to allow this difficult time to overshadow the beautiful experiences they had over the years. He also said that the educational experience of the students is a priority," a statement by the Curia read.

The educators recounted their experiences regarding the management of the school, the statement read. "They mentioned inclusion initiatives in the school and expressed their hope for more schools to adopt initiatives that leave a positive effect on children and society."
