Sunday, 13 November 2022, 15:01 Last update: about 2 years ago

Alexandra Mamo has resigned from her post as deputy police commissioner, MaltaToday reported on Sunday.

Sources informed MaltaToday that she has been on long leave for three months because she became frustrated with all the criticism that she was receiving from the media.

Just last week, during the Pilatus bank case, NGO Repubblika criticised Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg and Mamo for not obeying the orders given to them by Magistrate Ian Farrugia.

Mamo was appointed in this role in July 2021 and she was the first woman to occupy this position. She was responsible for investigations and technical support.

MaltaToday also revealed that the Home Affairs Ministry has issued calls for the post of deputy police commissioner on 11 November, and applications close on 25 November.

Anybody at the grade of assistant police commissioner can apply, and the post will include a one-year probation period and a scale 2 government salary which as of 2022 stands at €40,967.

Following this news, the president of Repubblika, Robert Aquilina publicly wrote on Facebook that Repubblika have been saying that Mamo was hindering any justice taking place in the role that she was in.

“They tried to ignore the warnings, but with time they realized that we were right about Mamo,” he said.

He pointed out that although she has resigned, the police force has still suffered a lot. He said that now the police force is demotivated and lacking many capable people who left because they could not take the state that the police force was in.

This resignation follows the resignation of Superintendent Frank Tabone and the Financial Crimes Investigation Department Inspector, Anthony Scerri, who was part of many corruption cases and even led the search of former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s house.
