Fearne says inflation burden being shouldered by government

Labour Party deputy leader for parliamentary affairs and Health Minister Chris Fearne said that the Maltese government is shouldering most of the burden being brought about by inflation.

Addressing the first session of the PL’s general conference, Fearne said that the world is facing stiff challenges with the rise in the price of energy and fuel.

In many countries, the most vulnerable sectors of society are the ones that are suffering the most, as taxes are on the rise and no wage or pension increases are being given.

In Malta, the government has continued to increase wages and pensions, while at the same time taking on the burden of the increase in energy and fuel prices, he said.

We are sustaining our families and business by keepin the price of energy stable, while at the same time wages and pensions are on the rise. We have a low unemployment rate too, he said.

He added that the Nationalist Party is divided and cannot be an effective opposition. We are a united party, and when the storm hits, we become more united to face it head on.

The PL’s deputy leader for party affairs, Daniel Micallef, said the party needs to work incessantly to instill confidence, as this is brought about by the decisions taken.

He said the government took decisions which safeguarded jobs, and has a vision which will see the economy grow nine times more than the European average. This was happening in spite of retaining the same prices of fuel and energy we had before the war in Ukraine started.

He said that change and innovation kept the party politically relevant. In the first months of this legislature, the government had implemented reforms that were of benefit to all, and this rhythm must continue in the coming years.
