Thursday, 5 January 2023, 14:25 Last update: about 3 years ago

The Local Enforcement System Agency will be giving out a total of €1.1 million for 20 different projects around Malta and Gozo. The money was collected from contraventions.

In three years, more than 60 projects will have been carried out with cost of around €3.5 million, the government said in a statement.

The regional councils that will be benefiting from this scheme for this year are the east, south and west, while the local councils are: Nadur, Valletta, Ħal Luqa, Pembroke, Ħal Għaxaq, San Lawrenz, San Giljan, Naxxar, Swieqi, Munxar, Mtarfa, Ta' Xbiex, Marsa, Mosta, Dingli and Sliema.

This was announced in a press conference by the Minister for the Security Byron Camilleri and the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli.

For this year, the agency will be financially assisting in investment in aspects of security in the localities; in the development of new spaces that are currently in a state of disrepair; in upgrading existing open spaces; in restoration of historical places; and in alternative transport.

The minister said that by taking this initiative on, LESA has shown that it not only returns to society but also invests in the community.

"Nobody anticipated that the community projects scheme it would be so successful,” Camilleri said.

Camilleri said that the projects selected this year, as previously, will be having a positive impact on the localities and the quality of life of citizens.

On her part, Zerafa Civelli praised local and regional councils that have brought forward their projects as they will lead to upgraded localities.
