The abortion issue could be the start of the downfall of the Labour Party, former Labour minister Evarist Bartolo strongly hinted today.

In a series of questions on his Facebook profile, the former PL Education and Foreign Minister asked whether the abortion issue could lead to a movement against the PL in the same way that the divorce issue led to a movement against the Nationalist Party.

With the way the abortion issue is being treated, "are we sure that we are not weakening the huge social block that led the PL to huge electoral victories in 2013, 2017 and 2022?"

If no agreement is found on the government's amendment, could it be that this will give a chance to the PN to start winning back support it started to lose since the 2008 election?

Could it be that a movement against the PL will start because of the abortion issue in the same way that one was created because of the divorce issue?

The government is pushing for an amedment to the abortion law which many are interpreting to signify the introduction of abortion, a label that the government refuses but which is gathering momentum.

Divorce was introduced in Malta in 2011 after a referendum that took place that same year, and which saw the Nationalist Party, then in government, strongly opposing the issue.
