Jeremie Camilleri to be charged with murder in connection with crash

Thursday, 19 January 2023, 10:55 Last update: about 2 years ago

Jeremie Camilleri is to be charged with the murder of Pelin Kaya today, according to reports.

Camilleri, who is 33 years old and is a Maltese-French national, will be charged with homicide, after the car he was driving ran over Kaya, a 30-year-old Turkish woman, before smashing through a fuel station, and ended up in a KFC restaurant in Gzira on Wednesday.

Kaya died from her injuries.

CCTV footage shows the driver casually walk out of his car immediately after the incident, and eyewitnesses said that he also threatened bystanders who tried to help Kaya.

Another video by a bystander shows the moment that Camilleri was tasered and subdued by two police officers.  Sources have told The Malta Independent that tests showed that Camilleri had a significant amount of drugs in his system at the time of the incident.

The Times of Malta reported that Camilleri is set to be charged with murder this afternoon.

It will not be Camilleri’s first visit to court: The Toulouse-born Lija resident, 33, had been placed on probation after admitting to two petty thefts in which health supplements worth a total of €92 were stolen from Attard and Sliema on 2 January, 2023.

But he had also breached the conditions of a probation order that had been issued to him upon his conviction for another offence by a court in Gozo in February 2021.
