There are a total of 589 prisoners currently being held at Corradino Correctional Facility, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said.
PN MP Charles Azzopardi submitted a parliamentary question to Camilleri, asking how many prisoners are currently being held at Corradino, as well as how many of them are foreigners from 2017 up until today.
There were 264 foreign prisoners in 2017, which increased during the years. 2018 saw 283 prisoners, with a sharp increase in 2019, where 531 prisoners were foreign. 2020 and 2021 saw 673 and 475 foreign inmates being held at the prison respectively.
In 2022, 259 prisoners were of foreign nationality.
Azzopardi also asked how many foreign prisoners were on bail, and how many of them are currently waiting for a jury trial on attempted murder, murder, aggravated theft and drug trafficking. Camilleri did not divulge, asking Azzopardi to ask the question to the Minister concerned.
