War Sailor, a feature film coproduced by Malta’s Falkun Films, will now be released as its own Netflix miniseries, which will be launched on April 5.
The film is a Norwegian-Germany-Malta co-production between Mer Film, Rohfilm Factory and Falkun Films.
The Maltese film producers of Falkun Films are Anika Psaila Savona and Pierre Ellul, who was previously interviewed by The Malta Independent on Sunday.
“Having a miniseries on Netflix is a new important milestone for Falkun Films. This collaboration between Norway, Germany and Malta will be seen all over the world showcasing the talent of all our cast and crew,” Psaila Savona said.
“At Falkun we are convinced that it is through coproductions that we can elevate our industry. It’s 2023 and the focus is still on bringing foreign films to shoot here. We’re still not having real conversations about creating our own films and entering into coproductions with other countries, creating partnerships with coproducers which then allows us a country to be associated with successful projects like War Sailor. By pooling and sharing resources of talent, finance, and know how we can create content of much higher quality,” Ellul said.
War Sailor is written and directed by Gunnar Vikene who said that the film was originally written as both a feature film and a mini-series.
When editing the film they realised that a lot of footage could not make it into the two-hour-long film, but now the miniseries will be three hours involving several new scenes.
Based on true events, War Sailor is a period drama that tells the story of how two Norwegian sailors try to survive when German submarines attack their merchant ship during the outbreak of World War II.
