There are no Maltese in Sudan who have requested evacuation, but an international company has asked Malta for assistance to help evacuate their employees, Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg said.

Borg was responding to a parliamentary question made by PL MP Naomi Cachia, who asked for an update on how the government is handling the situation in Sudan. He also gave a similar response to PN MP Mario De Marco who asked whether there were any Maltese in South Sudan seeking assistance.

Currently, there is a 72-hour ceasefire and a number of nations are rushing to evacuate embassy staff and citizens.

Borg did not specify the company, however, Times of Malta reported that the international company is Corinthia Hotels, which has a hotel in Sudan's capital Khartoum.

Borg clarified that none of the employees at this company were Maltese.

Borg said that Sudan bordering Libya concerned the government due to Malta and Libya's close geographical position. He added that Malta took the same stance of the EU and condemned the fighting taking place.

He announced that he will be visiting Ethopia and Rwanda in the coming days to discuss the conflict with the African leaders.
