The Malta Tourism Authority is currently without a Compliance Director, Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo told Parliament on Monday.
Bartolo was answering a question to this end by PN MP and spokesperson for tourism Mario De Marco.
He confirmed the news, adding that procedures to reoccupy the current vacant position have already started.
Although no name was mentioned, sources told The Malta Independent that the position was held by retired Colonel David Mifsud.
Mifsud served for 25 years with the Armed Forces of Malta before retiring and eventually joining the MTA in 2013.
According to the MTA’s online organigram, Mifsud occupied the position of Director Compliance and Regulatory.
He led the MTA’s compliance efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic in order for the authority to ascertain that all catering and hospitality establishments were following the rules established by health authorities in view of the pandemic.
