‘Should not happen again’ – Minister on police search for man who was already in prison

Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri admitted that the police made a mistake when it issued a search for a man who was already in prison and said that this “should not happen again.”

A few weeks ago, the police issued a request for information about Marziq Abdelaziz, a man who was wanted in connection with an ongoing court case, but the search was later called off as he was later found in prison.

Camilleri was responding to a question put forward by PN MP Joe Giglio on Wednesday, who asked about this “embarrassing situation” and inquired about what the Minister was going to do to prevent this from happening again.

“I understand that when people work they make mistakes, but this doesn’t justify it. We expect that these mistakes don’t happen,” Camilleri responded.

He also said that it was a shame that the police would make such a mistake when recent data shows that the police are experiencing more trust from the people.

Camilleri also referred to another case, where a self-employed truck drive Ryan Dimech was not informed about a pending court case after a statement was issued by the police.

In this case, he said that this was not a mistake from the police’s end as they were simply following the order of a magistrate.
