The Nationalist Party expressed its concern after statistics published by the NSO on Friday showed that by the end of May, Malta’s debt exceeded €9 billion, an increase of €673.8 million than in May 2022, PN Spokesperson for Finance Jerome Caruana Cilia said in a statement.
“These figures are not being said by the Nationalist Party, but by the National Statistics Office”.
The MP expressed concern over reports that an agreement will soon be reached for fiscal sustainability mechanisms to initiate again among the Member States of the European Union in the coming months.
“Regarding this, the Minister of Finance Clyde Caruana has not yet said anything in Parliament” he said.
The PN said these figures are “the result of scandal after scandal, which are the true legacy of the Labour party in the last ten years (in government). It continued by saying that it’s a pity that I the culture of "I don't care, everyone's pigging out" is being paid for by the people's money. “
“This is also why, in addition to being ethical and morally just, Robert Abela and his friends must see that what was stolen from our country comes back,” he said.
The Opposition continues to pressure the Government on eliminating the “corruption tax” and ensuring that public finances remain sustainable, particularly considering the increase in the interest rates.
