The call for a public inquiry into Jean Paul Sofia’s death got lost in the PL’s legalism, PN Leader Bernard Grech on Friday.
In a press conference, Grech reminded how despite the tragic construction death happening more than seven months ago, the Prime Minister Robert Abela is still “banging on the parliamentary desk against a public inquiry”.
On Thursday, the House of Representatives debated an Opposition motion calling for a public inquiry in the death of Jean Paul Sofia, who died on 3 December last year after a building under construction collapsed in Kordin. A vote on the motion is still to be taken, with the government proposing changes which remove any reference to a need for a public inquiry.
Calling the PM cold hearted, the opposition leader said that in denying a public inquiry he is not only denying Sofia’s mother’s access from the truth but also the nation as the whole.
In explaining why the country needs a public into the case, he said that some questions cannot be answered by just the conclusion of a magisterial inquiry.
Grech said that apart from a fight against the PL, the PN is also going to continue pressuring on the Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa to take action. He added that he is upset for the fact that the authorities in this country are not using their power properly.
On Gafa, he said that the police commissioner shouldn’t be waiting for a magisterial inquiry to investigate those responsible for the death of the 20- year old.
Asked why in parliament on Thursday, the PN called for a two third majority into the appointment of the people to carry out the public inquiry, Grech said that the PN believes in impartiality. He added that with a two thirds vote, the PN wants to ensure that if and when the inquiry happens, that the members doing it have no political and institutional ties.
