Ramblers propose safe trail crossing at Falka Gap on Mgarr Bypass

Saturday, 8 July 2023, 10:45 Last update: about 12 months ago

Ramblers have sent a proposal to Infrastructure Malta with plans to implement a safe crossing at Falka Gap because as things stand, there is no safe means to walk across Mgarr Bypass.

The Victoria Lines follows the original military path that was laid out by the British, which traverses Malta from the East to the West. It passed through three arterial roads, at Naxxar Gap (Telgha t'Alla w Ommu), Targa Gap and Falka Gap (Mgarr Bypass). Safe crossings are in place on the other roads except for Falka Gap.

Facebook group Friends of The Victoria Lines Trail and NGO Ramblers Malta have been in contact with Infrastructure Malta since July 2021 and they had also subsequently corresponded with Transport Malta.

Friends of The Victoria Lines Trail posted on Facebook explaining how IM had informed them that a pedestrian crossing was not possible at the exact point where the Victoria Lines passes due to safety considerations since the road is at a bend.

Therefore, instead, they wrote back to IM proposing a crossing a little bit further down the road.

“At present, the nearest pedestrian crossing is to be found 400 meters down the road, in the direction of Mosta. Rerouting the V L Trail to use this existing pedestrian crossing cannot be an acceptable option. This is not only because of the additional distance of about one kilometre, mostly along paved roads that this diversion would entail. But also because it would mean leaving out from the trail a significant segment of the VL.”

“We do believe that our latest proposal is feasible and we earnestly hope that it will turn out to be the solution that we all desire, for a safe trail crossing at Falka Gap.”

The post also reminded the government of its electoral manifesto pledge to turn the Victoria Lines into Malta’s first national trail.
