Parliament sitting cut short because of power cut, Sofia public inquiry vote on Wednesday

The vote on the PN’s motion calling for government to set up a public inquiry into the death of Jean Paul Sofia will be taken on Wednesday.

Tuesday’s parliamentary sitting was adjourned early after a power cut hit the building.

The sitting was suspended whilst PL MP Alex Muscat was addressing Parliament about the new agricultural bill, when a blackout occurred.

Muscat, confused, asked Deputy Speaker David Agius whether he should continue his speech or not, when Agius then suspended the sitting.

Speaker Anglu Farrugia returned to the sitting and adjourned parliament for Wednesday, with two sittings to occur in the morning and in the afternoon.

PL Whip Andy Ellul read the agenda for the next day, including votes on the PN’s motion for a public inquiry into Sofia’s death.

Jean Paul Sofia was the 20-year-old who died last December, when a building under construction collapsed in Kordin.

In a parliamentary sitting last Thursday, the two sides of Parliament discussed a motion presented by the Opposition calling for a public inquiry into the incident.

The government has refused to accept to set up a public inquiry, with Prime Minister Robert Abela insisting that a magisterial inquiry is enough.
