Grech appeals for pressure on MPs to vote in favour of Jean Paul Sofia public inquiry

Wednesday, 12 July 2023, 09:51 Last update: about 4 years ago

PN Leader Bernard Grech addressed the nation on Wednesday morning, in an appeal for more pressure on government MPs to vote in favour of setting up a public inquiry into Jean Paul Sofia’s death, which will be taken today.

Grech described today’s vote as “historic” as each MP and representative will have the choice tonight to vote in favour of truth, justice, and for the benefit of the vulnerable, or else vote to stifle the truth and protect the strong.

“Up until now, despite Jean Paul Sofia’s mother making several requests, came to Parliament begging, sent letters and asked us to launch a public inquiry, government continued to be hard-headed,” Grech said.

He said that the PN will be casting a strong and clear vote in favour of truth and justice, so that Sofia would not have died for nothing.

Grech said that we must learn with the public inquiry the full truth, what was done wrong, and what we must not do again.

“What were the shortcomings by the administration and authorities to have led us here?” he asked.

Grech appealed for continuous pressure on government MPs, genuinely asking the Prime Minister to stop being hard-headed, and together with PN MPs, vote in favour of a public inquiry.

“Only through this, through national unity, we can strengthen our politics in favour of the truth and justice, and make sure our children have the right to go home safe and sound,” Grech said.

20-year-old Jean Paul Sofia died under the rubble of a construction site in Kordin last December. His mother, Isabelle Bonnici, has been calling for a public inquiry into his death. Till now, government has refused to accept to set up a public inquiry, with Prime Minister Robert Abela insisting that a magisterial inquiry is enough.

The vote on the PN’s motion calling for government to set up a public inquiry into the death of Jean Paul Sofia will be taken tonight.
