Foreign Affairs Minister Chris Fearne reaffirmed Malta's support for Ukraine and welcomed progress on a proposed 21st package of EU sanctions against Russia, while also calling for stability in the Middle East and the protection of freedom of navigation.

Speaking during the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Fearne said the European Union must remain committed to supporting Ukraine as the war continues, a statement said.

He also expressed concern over the continued activity of Russia's so-called Shadow Fleet in the Mediterranean, warning of sanctions evasion, risks to maritime security and possible environmental consequences.

Fearne reiterated Malta's support for Ukraine's path towards European Union membership and welcomed the European Commission's continued work in this area.

"As this war continues to lengthen, the European Union must remain committed and stay the course," he said.

"At the same time, we must continue working together to preserve stability in the Middle East, safeguard freedom of navigation, and uphold international law."

EU foreign ministers also discussed developments in the Black Sea, the situation in the Middle East and the recent conflict involving Iran.

During an EU-Gulf Cooperation Council high-level forum, Fearne raised Malta's concerns over tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz and neighbouring Gulf states.

He called on all sides to avoid renewed escalation and to uphold the Memorandum of Understanding.

Fearne said the Strait of Hormuz was an international waterway and stressed the importance of protecting freedom of navigation and seafarers in line with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

He also expressed Malta's support for progress on visa liberalisation between the European Union and Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

On Gaza and the West Bank, Fearne reiterated Malta's opposition to forced displacement and called for the release of withheld Palestinian clearance revenues.

He also said sustainable mechanisms should be identified to support the Palestinian Authority beyond existing frameworks.

Ministers additionally discussed developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sudan and relations between the European Union and the United Nations.

Following the Foreign Affairs Council, Fearne attended a meeting of the Palestine Donor Group.

He also met UAE Minister of State Lana Nusseibeh on the sidelines of the Council, with discussions focusing on regional developments and further cooperation between Malta and the United Arab Emirates
