PL accuses PN of attacking the AG and wanting to delay justice in Sofia’s case

The Labour Party said that the Nationalist Party is only interested in delaying justice in the Jean Paul Sofia case, after the PN insisted that the AG gives a full public account of any information given to the Prime Minister on the Jean Paul Sofia magisterial inquiry.

"If there is anyone who should give a full account, it is those who are misleadingly spreading false things in relation to this inquiry," the PL said in a statement.

On Monday, Prime Minister Robert Abela said that Magistrate Marsanne Farrugia notified the AG that the inquiry will be extended by 30 days. Following this news, Abela later announced that a public inquiry into Sofia's death will be held, making a U-turn on his previous refusals, and also took aim at the delays in the Magisterial inquiry.  Abela made this announcement a little over an hour before thousands gathered in front of Castille to attend Sofia's vigil. Just days prior, Abela and the PL MPs shut down a motion filed by the Opposition that was requesting a public inquiry into the death of Sofia.

The PL has accused the PN of attacking the Attorney General, discrediting the justice process and only concerned with delaying justice.

The PL said that it is no surprise that the PN has not supported the government's call to speed up the magisterial inquiry and it accused the PN of using the death of Sofia for partisan reasons.

The PL clarified that the legal procedure, where after sixty days in which a magisterial inquiry has not been completed, the inquiring Magistrate must report to the AG about the delay every thirty days, is normal practice.

"The appeal remains for the (magisterial) inquiry to be completed as soon as possible because only then will we be closer to justice. It is a pity that the Nationalist Party never joined this appeal."
