Throughout the first half of 2023, Heritage Malta has unveiled some truly positive news that will undoubtedly resonate with culture and history enthusiasts.

The reports are in, and they paint a vivid picture of a surge in visitors gracing the esteemed halls of Heritage Malta's sites and museums. This significant upswing in visitor numbers stands as a testament to the timeless allure of Malta's rich heritage and to the organization's unwavering commitment to safeguarding and showcasing it.

This surge in interest is not merely a fleeting trend; it signifies a genuine hunger among people to delve into the captivating narratives that lie within Malta's past. The earnest efforts of Heritage Malta to cultivate immersive experiences and kindle a profound connection with history are undeniably reaping rewards, making this a very good piece of news for both the organization and the broader cause of cultural exploration.

A closer look at the data for the first half of the year reveals an encouraging story. From January to June, a staggering 631,406 paying visitors ventured into the embrace of Heritage Malta's museums and sites. This marks a notable increase of 16,366 visitors compared to the first half of 2019 – the year that directly preceded the pandemic's onset – when a total of 615,040 paying visitors were registered. It is worth noting that the figures for the first half of this year exclude sites temporarily closed due to substantial restoration works but were accessible in 2019.

Additionally, the first half of 2023 saw 62,856 non-paying visitors, encompassing those who explored sites and museums using student or senior passports.

A fascinating revelation lies in the spending patterns per capita. A comparison to 2019 showcases an uptick in visitors' spending habits, including purchases from the gift shops situated at Heritage Malta's museums and sites. While the average spending per capita during the first half of 2019 stood at €4.41, the corresponding figure for January to June of the current year escalated to €5.51.

When looking at the bigger financial picture, the total revenue generated from ticket sales and gift shop transactions reached €3,443,275.05 during the first half of 2019. This figure increased to €3,504,741.71 in the same period of 2023, indicating a notable growth of €61,466.66.

The most frequented Heritage Malta sites during the January-to-June period of this year were Ġgantija, Ħaġar Qim, Fort St Elmo, St Paul's Catacombs, and Mnajdra.

Manoel Theatre

The positive trend is also obtaining at the various public culture organisations.  Let me take the Manoel Theatre, just to give one example. Official figures show that for the period between January and July 39,300 people visited the Theatre as opposed to the 22,000 who visited this beautiful gem throughout the whole year of 2022.

This means that in the first seven months, the number of people who visited the theatre exceed the total amount obtained last year.

All this is fantastic news, not only for the cultural sector, but also for the touristic product we want to promote and provide to the people who come and visit our shores.  The investment we undertook in the Theatre in the past years reaped dividents as the artistic calendar has been extended and made a big difference.

The merit of course goes to the wonderful team at the Manoel Theatre headed by Dr Michael Grech and Mr Edward Zammit in their respective capacities and the respective hardworking staff.  A thanks also goes to Perit Adriam Mamo, the artistic director, who fit perfectly in the role and is doing excellent work.

Carnival in Summer

After a long gap of three years, Summer Carnival is returning with all its festive splendour!

From August 18th to 20th, the exuberance of Buġibba, Birżebbuga, and Marsascala will come alive in a series of vibrant, free events with the joyous spirit of Malta's beloved Carnival, now infused with the sunny essence of summer.  This event is being organised by Festivals Malta, hand in hand with the respective Local Councils who have done a very good job and gave a lot of support.

This festival will showcase the fantastic talent of our carnival enthusiasts who give so much so that this cultural expression grows from strength to strength.

The excitement commences tonight and carries on tomorrow in Buġibba, followed by another exciting event in Birżebbuga, culminating in a spectacular grand finale in Marsascala. It is an invitation you would not want to miss; mark your calendars, embrace the jubilant atmosphere, and enjoy the unforgettable experience!
