The Nationalist Party has released a statement calling for more government transparency, following news reports that Enemalta CEO Jonathan Cardona was sacked after the recent power cuts.
The Shift News reports that Cardona, who was placed at Enemalta on a €160,000 annual salary by Energy Minister Miriam Dalli, has been removed from the post on the direct order of Prime Minister Robert Abela in the wake of last month's nationwide blackout debacle.
The Opposition stated that the Government has the duty to be transparent about the management of Enemalta since it holds a majority share in the company. The party continued that the government has the responsibility to clarify this situation and that they should confirm this news and its surrounding details, such as whether it is true that this dismissal was directly ordered by the Prime Minister, as well as what role the Enemalta board played throughout this situation.
Moreover, the Opposition is questioning Cardona's credentials to have now been sent to lead the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA).
The PN continued that should this news be true, it would mean that Prime Minister Robert Abela lied when blaming heat and climate change for the July power outages. Furthermore, the PN also believes that this means that Abela is acknowledging the fact that responsibility should be borne for the power cuts suffered. The party said that if such is the case, then the July power cuts were a result of "incompetence and lack of planning".
To conclude their statement, the Opposition reiterated "the comedy of 'musical chairs'" in the manner that the Government appoints people in crucial positions. They finished by describing how the Government is disregarding meritocracy to instead prioritize placing people they know are loyal to them, rather than people loyal to the common good and the national interest.
