Labour Party President Ramona Attard has said that her father is not involved in any benefits fraud.

In a Facebook post, Attard said that she will not "allow any person to attack me or my family using my father who does not have the ability to answer publicly."

Attard described 'attackers' as a "clique of evil that is ready to use the genuine case of my father for partisan purposes, and for the sole reason that I am his daughter who has a political role".

She said that such accusations are false and that her father has never received assistance or payments under benefits for severe disability "which is the merit of the investigation being mentioned." He has, however ,been certified under the invalidity pension more than 8 years ago, after a medical process, "and not a few years ago as is being mentioned regarding the alleged cases that were in the media."

The investigation she mentions refers to what the Times of Malta had reported, that former Labour MP Silvio Grixti was implicated in a scandal that allegedly enabled hundreds of people to receive disability benefits which they were not entitled to.

She said that her father's case is indeed a genuine case, and said that the first time he was entitled to said benefit was back in 1993 "when I was only 9 years old."

Delving into why her father has been certified as 'invalid' to work, Attard said that her father suffered several traumas including being the target of a gunshot, during his role as a policeman.

She said that all this is documented and recorded and signed off by a psychiatric care professional, whom her father has been visiting regularly "and has nothing to do with the case/cases that are being mentioned in the media."

"My father's case is a one that falls under 'invalidity pension' - a completely different benefit - and goes back many years and has no connection with these cases that were mentioned in the media", she said in her post.

Moreover, she said that to this day, no one has spoken to her father about the ongoing investigations or implicated him.

"It is a shame that someone is trying to instigate criminal action on a genuine case in my family, simply because he is my father, " she said.
