Former MP says police chief ‘will apply’ for FIAU director post

Monday, 11 September 2023, 14:32 Last update: about 3 years ago

Former Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi has strongly hinted that police commissioner Angelo Gafa is eyeing the post of director at the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit.

In a post on Facebook, the lawyer said that Gafa “will apply” for the vacancy which was made available as from today on the FIAU Facebook page.

He said that the police commissioner held meetings with the FIAU in the past weeks.

“Do you understand this?” the MP wrote.

Gafa has been in the spotlight after the police have not taken any action against the bigger fish allegedly involved in the benefit fraud racket scheme, which was revealed earlier this month by the Times of Malta.

Some 800 people were receiving benefits for which they were not entitled. Former MP Silvio Grixti has been implicated in the scandal, having allegedly provided documents for people to receive these benefits.

In a press conference on Monday, Repubblika president Robert Aquilina noted how none of the police commissioners who served under the Labour governments in the last 10 years had the backbone to fight all that is wrong.
