Doctors for Road Safety concerned drivers given licence ‘due to external interference’

Tuesday, 3 October 2023, 08:16 Last update: about 3 years ago

Doctors for Road Safety (D4RS) said Tuesday it is concerned that there are drivers who may have been granted a licence to drive under questionable circumstances due to external interference with the examination process.

If these allegations are proven, then all such licenses must be reviewed in the interest of road safety, the association said.

D4RS also calls for the necessary governance to be put in place to ensure that this important privilege of being granted a licence to drive is issued according to transparent objective and standardised criteria which can stand up to scrutiny.

The association was referring to reports which exposed how former Transport Minister Ian Borg together with other people in authority at Transport Malta have allegedly facilitated the acquiring of driving licences, either by enabling applicants to skip the waiting list or arranging for people who to pass the driving test even though they were clearly in need of further lessons.
