Rota ‘deeply alarmed’ by licence racket revelations

Tuesday, 3 October 2023, 18:12 Last update: about 3 years ago

NGO Rota said that it is "deeply alarmed by recent revelations regarding a widespread driving license racket."

"It has come to our attention that a significant number of individuals may have been illicitly assisted in passing their driving tests. We firmly assert that such activities undermine the very core of road safety and ethical driving practices."

"What truly troubles us at Rota is the potential impact of this racket on society as a whole. The existing challenges of inadequate infrastructure for vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, are already a grave concern. Adding drivers to our roads who have obtained their licenses unlawfully and without the necessary competences poses an imminent and substantial danger. The consequences of placing unqualified drivers behind the wheel of speeding vehicles on public roads are nothing short of a catastrophe waiting to happen," it said.

"We pose this question to all those allegedly involved in this racket: What if the individuals you aided in passing their driving tests unlawfully were to cause an accident involving your own loved ones - your mother, father, daughter, or son? The potential for tragic and fatal accidents resulting from such actions is a horrifying reality that cannot be ignored."

In light of these grave concerns and in the best interest of all road users, Rota firmly called for the following actions.

"We urge authorities to take swift action to revoke the driving licenses of individuals who obtained them through illicit means. This measure is essential to protect public safety."

"We call for a thorough and impartial investigation into the alleged corruption behind this driving license racket. Those responsible for compromising road safety must be held accountable for their actions."

Rota said it remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting road safety and advocating for the protection of all road users.
