Security in Gozo is being threatened, PN says

Thursday, 5 October 2023, 10:20 Last update: about 4 years ago

The Nationalist Party said on Thursday that security in Gozo is being threatened, and after several incidents of violence in Gozitan streets, residents, businesses, and members within the Gozo Local Councils have expressed their concern.

“However, the government remains silent and does not care about this, with the hope that the problem is swept under the rug,” the PN said.

It said that the problem is not improving, and what will probably occur, is yet another tragedy like we have already had.

“Why does the government not intervene when authorities are struggling with limited resources?” the PN asked.

It said that the Nationalist party has maintained that the Police Force should be strengthened by improving their conditions so they can effectively fight against crime.

“We have a demotivated, overworked, overstretched, and underpaid force. We cannot continue like this,” it said.

The PN also said that agencies responsible for enforcing the law should be strengthened so that discipline is enhanced everywhere.

It said that the courts should be given resources to function properly, including rewriting the Criminal Code to make sense in today's world.

“Today, we are facing a reality where one of the most fundamental human rights, peace of mind in a secure environment, is also at risk. This reality needs to be confronted to ensure that the right to live in a safe country is once again a reality,” the PN said.

“Government should always listen to good advice, wherever it comes from, for the good of Malta,” the PN said.

The statement was signed by PN spokesperson for Home Affairs Joe Giglio, and PN spokesperson for Gozo Alex Borg.
