Sunday, 15 October 2023, 08:00 Last update: about 4 years ago

In our increasingly complex global landscape, the arts have the potential to engage with diversity, promote inclusivity and stimulate thought-provoking dialogues. Spazju Kreattiv, Malta's National Centre for Creativity, stands as an exemplary beacon in this regard. Through an insightful interview with the artistic director, DANIEL AZZOPARDI, we delve into Spazju Kreattiv's commitment to diversity, inclusivity and the power of the arts to drive meaningful change. Written by Hayley Bonnici.

One of the defining features of this year's programme is its resolute dedication to diversity and inclusivity. Artistic director Daniel Azzopardi emphasises: "One of the strengths of our programme is the multitude of topics which artists from different social backgrounds present." Azzopardi's vision underscores the importance of representing a wide array of perspectives and experiences, creating a welcoming and trust-filled platform where individuals can explore sensitive topics openly. This emphasis on cultural diversity enriches the programme while also empowering individuals through the transformative power of art. "In this framework, Spazju Kreattiv is at the forefront of providing the means for people to feel empowered through arts and creativity," Azzopardi continues.

Additionally, this inclusivity goes beyond traditional artistic presentations. It actively fosters engagement with its audience on a deeper level through a variety of initiatives. Azzopardi shares that the institution organises post-show discussions, workshops and interactive elements that enhance the contemporary relevance of its programme. Initiatives like Taħdita Teatru and Art Additives provide artists with a platform to discuss with an audience the creative processes and delve deeper into thematic explorations. Moreover, Spazju Kreattiv's innovative endeavours include the introduction of a podcast, providing audiences with the opportunity to participate in meaningful conversations from the comfort of their homes. Additionally, the produced art workshops for children aim to instil a love for the arts from a young age, ensuring that artistic appreciation becomes an integral part of their lives.

Spazju Kreattiv recognises the power of art to provoke thought and stimulate dialogue on crucial societal issues. As Azzopardi notes: "An essential part of the arts is to provoke and instigate discussion and conversation on highly pertinent issues." This approach positions Spazju Kreattiv as a vital contributor to the social ecosystem of the country. "Case in point, this new season will be touching upon matters of great relevance, including gender diversity, intergenerational harmony, mental health, environmental sustainability and social equality." By tackling these pressing issues, it ignites conversations that lead to greater awareness and, ultimately, positive change.

Spazju Kreattiv is not only dedicated to presenting thought-provoking content but also to improving its practices based on feedback and insights from the community. Azzopardi goes on to explain the importance of an open-door policy that allows stakeholders and audiences to actively contribute to the institution's initiatives. "Data collation is an integral part of this strategy, and by now we have a system in place to allow us to read audience behaviours and the feedback received by artists." By closely monitoring these aspects, Spazju Kreattiv ensures that it continually evolves and enhances its offerings to better serve its community. The arts have the extraordinary capacity to enrich communities and enhance the quality of life and as the National Centre for Creativity, Spazju Kreattiv is on a mission to promote this idea. The institution's open and inclusive approach enables people of all ages to contribute to cultural enrichment and artistic appreciation. Numerous studies validate the positive impact of exposure to the arts on social well-being. By providing a sense of belonging to different communities, Spazju Kreattiv positions arts and creativity at the core of the creative ecology. This commitment serves to enhance the cultural fabric of Malta and extend its influence beyond its borders.

This year's branding serves as a significant component of the communication strategy. It effectively captures the essence of the artistic process, symbolising the fluidity and evolution inherent in creativity. Azzopardi explains that the annual theme is carefully developed together with Spazju Kreattiv in-house designer, Luca Azzopardi, aligning with the organisation's strategy and programme. The visuals for each season reflect a commitment to remain at the forefront of creative evolution and social discourse. This dynamic branding encapsulates the enthusiasm for a new cycle in Spazju Kreattiv's enduring legacy and the decision-making process behind Spazju Kreattiv's programme is rooted in a vision of inclusive creativity. Azzopardi elaborates: "This season's visuals take inspiration from our renewed commitment to remain at the forefront of creative evolution and a key stakeholder in social discourse and policy-making both in Malta and abroad. The brand represents this vibrant approach and enthusiasm for this new cycle in the organisation's enduring legacy. This new season represents the start of a new cycle in Spazju Kreattiv's artistic direction. While my first three years in the role served to establish a new strategy framework that champions artistic excellence, community outreach and internationalisation, the advent of the 2023/24 programme seeks to strengthen the organisation's key role in the creative sector."

The announced events, over 520 of them, reflect a strong commitment to curating high-quality experiences that enable collaborators to enhance their skills in a professional and stimulating environment. This approach is fostered within an inclusive framework, encompassing a variety of topics and perspectives that resonate with diverse Maltese communities and beyond. In a world marked by geopolitical challenges and environmental crises, where individual rights are constantly in question, the creative sector is called upon to lead. "Spazju Kreattiv, as a stakeholder in the evolution of the contemporary creative sector, stands resolute in its mission to be a conduit for constructive change and a torchbearer for inclusive dialogues that bring about meaningful impact."
