The death of former Maltese national team coach Tony Formosa at the age of 86 was announced on Saturday.
Tony Formosa was born in Rabat, Gozo on 2 June 1937.
He studied at the Liceo and later at St Michael's Training College where he became a teacher.
He obtained a diploma in Physical Education from Car‐ nagie College in Leeds. He followed a coaching course in Newcastle Upon Tyne where he obtained the English FA badge.
After a career as a player, he led Valletta in the 70s winning the Championship in 1974 for the first time in many years.
With Floriana, he achieved a record of 40 matches with‐ out defeat. He also managed Sliema Wanderers for several years.
He was also a ormer coach of the Maltese National team in 1966 and between 1971‐72 where he was the first coach in the first qualifying match of the World Cup against Hungary.
In 1967, he was the first coach in a competitive match of the U18 team against Italy.
Formosa was a founding member of the Malta Football Coaches Association and President for many years.
In 1987 he was appointed as Head of Sport within the Ministry of Education and Culture.
He was a member of the Committee for the Development of sport within the Council of Europe and vice President of the Sport for All International Federation.
