Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela said that the first 'specific' strategy to control tobacco is currently being developed, which will include a wide range of targeted initiatives aimed at reducing the prevalence of smoking and protecting public health.

Abela was replying to a parliamentary question made by PN MP Albert Buttigieg, who asked what steps government is taking to reduce cigarette abuse among the population, including minors. Buttigieg said that cigarettes are one of the main factors leading to various illnesses and even deaths.

Abela said that he is informed that the first specific tobacco control strategy is being developed, which includes measures to reduce the affordability of tobacco products, decrease their availability, reduce tobacco product advertising, and discourage the illicit trade of tobacco products.

The strategy also aims to improve awareness of the health impact and tobacco control through various media campaigns, leading to a healthier anti-smoking culture in the country, enhance services to assist individuals in quitting, and strengthen surveillance and research efforts.

Abela said that the Directorate for Health Promotion and Environmental Disease Prevention within the Public Health Superintendence offers free one-to-one sessions for individuals who want to quit or reduce their smoking habit, where a specialized individual plan is created to help people quit smoking. Individuals can also refer themselves by calling the Quitline on 80073333.

He said that group sessions are also organized for workers at their workplace to quit smoking. There are also efforts made with primary, middle, secondary, and post-secondary schools to increase awareness of the effects of smoking and vaping, he said.

Additional assistance is provided through a website and social media platforms, he said. Abela said that national campaigns against smoking and information about offered services are also disseminated. The 2024 campaign will focus on vaping, he said.
