Y-Plate Operators holding peaceful demonstration

Wednesday, 28 February 2024, 10:37 Last update: about 3 months ago

The Light Passenger Operators Association is holding a demonstration today, a slow moving carcade in protest of the current impositions on Y-plate operators in the industry sector, specifically the current pricing strategies being adopted by partner platforms impacting the sustainability of the small operator, and thus affecting the operator’s earnings.

As a point of clarification, a Y-Plate operator is partnered with platforms on a commission basis, whereby a trip is completed by the operator and a commission based fee will be due to the platform. The protest is therefore being held in order to re-evaluate current pricing strategies being adopted by platforms within the industry in the current constraints within today’s economy.

An independent operator puts forth time, energy and a financial investment in order to operate in the industry, the LPOA said in a statement on its Facebook page, and this is being undermined by predatory pricing based on an unsustainable business model, which is affecting the livelihood of the operator.

Every day we are experiencing an exodus of small self-employed operators dismantling their Y-Plate operations. The situation is desperate, this is a cry for help, the association said.

The gathering started at the Farmers Parking in Ta’ Qali.
