MRI tests can now be carried out in Gozo thanks to a new MRI machine within the Gozo general hospital.

This was announced during a visit to the Gozo General Hospital by the Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne, the Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela, and the Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri.

Some 3,000 Gozitans will be benefitting annually from the installation of this machine.  This new equipment will also reduce waiting times for MRI scans, the government said in a statement.

During the visit, Fearne explained that medical consultants conduct around 1,000  MRI tests per week for various conditions, and this MRI machine in Gozo will be beneficial for both healthcare professionals and patients from Gozo. He said that the €1.3 million expenditure from European Funds through the EU React Fund will allow the country to continue to enhance the technological tools that healthcare professionals can offer patients.

On his part, Abela said that "What we are announcing today is part of the investment that the government is making in healthcare in Gozo."

Camilleri said "This is another welcomed development where Gozitans will now be able to undergo MRI tests in Gozo itself.”
