PN MP defends PM and says that pelting eggs is unacceptable; ABBA says protest was ‘peaceful'

PN MP Albert Buttigieg (pictured above) came to the defence of Prime Minister Robert Abela, who was interrupted by a man who pelted eggs next to him during a speech he delivered on Tuesday night on the occasion of Freedom Day.

"Tell the truth (...) You have broken neutrality," the person, later identified as Leader of the political party ABBA Ivan Grech Mintoff shouted, as he threw a couple of eggs on the ground on stage while the Prime Minister spoke.

In a Facebook video on Wednesday, PN MP Albert Buttigieg said that while he and Prime Minister Robert Abela do not agree politically, and "while we have different opinions, it is not acceptable for someone to pelt eggs at the Prime Minister. Democracy isn't built like that. Democracy is built through arguments, discussions and ideas we create together for the common good of the country."

He invited "whoever committed the act to, not only apologise to the Prime Minister, but also to apologise in general as he offended not only the Labour Party and the Prime Minister, but also democracy."

In a statement, the ABBA party said that its egg-throwing protest yesterday "was a peaceful one." Ivan Grech Mintoff said "As can be seen clearly in the video, I was easily in reach of Robert Abela who could easily have been covered in eggs if we wanted to. Instead, we threw the eggs at his feet as a gesture of repulsion whilst sending a very clear message to him: Stop lying to the Maltese people and start doing the will of the people."

"Forty-five years ago the people of Malta chose and voted to never again be directly involved in other belligerent's wars and this was written into our Constitution - the highest law of the land," ABBA said. The ABBA party claimed that the Prime Minister has an "agreement with NATO and is sending military personnel into others' military operations. He does this in full agreement with the opposition and we have a Maltese representative who, as President of the European Parliament also openly breaks our Constitution and the wishes of the Maltese people." No information was provided in the statement to substantiate the claims.

"Our protest was specifically to highlight this blatant abuse of power by all of our representatives." The party called for a debate with the Prime Minister.
