A man was critically injured in a fight which broke out in Birzebbuga on Sunday evening, the police said.

The incident happened in Triq San Edwardu at 7.30pm.

The police said that officers who turned up on site found a man, whose identity is still to be established, with head wounds.

The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Investigations led the police to discover that the man had been involved in a fight with another man, aged 34, of Santa Lucija. This latter man is being held for questioning.

Magistrate Philip Galea Farrugia is leading an inquiry.
