The Ministry of Education said Monday that it has set up a committee to run MCAST until a new principal is appointed, composed of the MCAST Board of Governors as well as certain public officials.
The Ministry for Education thanked Prof. James Joachim Calleja for his service as MCAST principal for the last 6 years. It said that the college is thankful for Prof. Calleja for running the College towards unprecendented academic standards. His contract was not renewed.
MCAST is currently in turmoil following cancelled exams and delayed results following directives issued by the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) on the 10th of May after the breakdown of talks over the new collective agreement.
The Ministry said that it appointed an interim committee, to ensure continuity in the College, which will come into force immediately to ensure the running of the College. It added that this committee will ensure that students and workers at the College will continue receiving support in this time, that a call for a new principal is issued, as well as coordinate the operation of the College currently as well as to open the new academic year.
The Ministry explained that the committee is made up of members of the Board of Governors of the College as well as public officials from the Public Service. It said that the process of change is being done in conformity with the regulations of public administration, of which all concerned parties were informed, last May.
