Two divers have died after finding themselves in difficulty on Saturday.

The police said the two men found themselves in difficulty while diving in Marsascala at 10.30am.

The two divers were assisted by members of the Armed Forces of Malta some 1.4 nautical miles off Zonqor Point, and they were taken ashore.

The two men were taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where they both died.

The police later said that the two men are from Poland, and are aged 45 and 48 years.

Magistrate Joseph Mifsud is leading an inquiry.

In its own statement, the AFM said that earlier Saturday morning, a local charter vessel requested the assistance for two foreign divers who found themselves in difficulty when diving.

The Armed Forces of Malta said it immediately dispatched the MELITA 1 Search and Rescue vessel and rescued the divers.

They were brought to Haywharf Base, the AFM said.
